Corded Petticoats

             If you don’t want a hoop skirt, but do want the shape of the Era, this petticoat is for you.  Prior to the invention of the hoopskirt, corded petticoats were  worn in combination with multi-layers of petticoats to provide the silhouette so popular to this Era. Once the hoopskirt arrived, many women omitted the layers of petticoats including the corded petticoat, in favor of the hoopskirt, for their large circumference day dresses and eveningwear.  Corded petticoats, however continued to be worn with the camp-dresses and many other styles of dress with narrow hemlines, as they help to hold the skirt out and prevent it from becoming entangled in the feet. The ADULT corded petticoat has a bottom circumference of just under 90”, which makes it perfect for camp dresses and any other style of dress with a narrow hemline.

        For young ladies, corded petticoats continued to be worn well into the 1880’s, when the bustle back replaced the fluffy look, even for the young girls.   Corded petticoats are great for girls and teens, as they help to give shape to the dresses without the hassles of the hoop skirts.  Made with a good quality cotton or poly/cotton cording, they are machine washable, which makes them ideal for the young ladies.  (Mom’s who have had to deal with pulling and replacing hoop skirt wires, will appreciate this.)  This is a wonderful way to satisfy the wants of young girls for their fluffy dresses.  The TEEN and GIRLS petticoats have a lower circumference of 65”, which is perfect for the fluff and flutter of the girls’ dresses.
