Vests provide easy cover up and concealment of shirts that are too big or too small. They are easily laundered, and they provide warmth to the wearer, under coats or jackets in colder weather. As with men, boys did not appear in public in their shirtsleeves. This was considered to be out in your underwear, particularly if the shirt was white. Wearing a vest enables the wearer to appear without a jacket or coat….a definite benefit on hot summer days, particularly if the vest is of a lightweight cotton or linen. This pattern is for three styles of vest: a military style (replicating that of the soldiers), a high button vest and a V-necked mid-height vest. Optional welt pockets can be added, if desired. The back of the vest is straight across and designed to come even with the waistband of the trousers. The vest can be adjusted using a buckle and belt in the back, so it can be made with room for growth. Depending on the fabric chosen this style of vest would have been worn from the early 50’s through the early 1900’s. Available in two size groups: 4-8 and 10-14
