Petticoat Length

Our corded petticoats are made of 100% cotton, with 3 rounds of cotton cording at the lower edge. It is this cording that your foot moves forward with each step, thus preventing the skirt from getting caught between your legs. The petticoat is trimmed with a simple round of lace and a pretty satin bow. It has a drawstring waist so will fit women up to 60 inch waist or hips. The skirt has a lower circumference of 88 inches allowing for a long stride or even running upon necessity.

Corded petticoats offer a wonderful alternative to both the hoopskirt and multiple layers of petticoats. Not only do they help to provide the shape so popular during the Civil War Era, without the hassle of hoop wires, they also prevent the skirts from getting caught up between the feet and legs when you move and most importantly are much safer around fire or flame. Many women, who were dressing not “for fashion” but for service and day-to-day life used corded petticoats.

Corded petticoats were not just worn during the mid-Victorian era, but extend back through to Elizabethan times. The bands of cording helped control the skirts, making walking and movement much easier, so if you are recreating any point in the past and find your skirts in need of some assistance, the corded petticoat may be the answer. This skirt is also perfect for those working at Historical sites.

SIZING:

For the best results this petticoat should fall about 4 inches above your ankle, so your foot does not catch on the corded bands. Simple growth tucks may be used to shorten a petticoat. We can make a corded petticoat to accommodate all heights.

Our petticoats can be machine washed in cool to warm water, bleached if necessary BUT should be hung to dry.
