Button Braces, Suspenders for men and boys, Victorian, 19th Century, civilian, military, Civil War re-enactor, mountain man, pioneer
A very simple common style of braces. They were called button braces because they attach and are adjusted using the buttons on the trousers and not slides or other metal hardware. Our button braces come in 7 sizes each with multiple button holes so that they can be adjusted to fit. The braces are made using cotton canvas or mattress ticking or if requested fancier brocades.
TO SIZE YOUR BRACES: please measure the wearer from waist in front to waist in back, over the shoulder. Add 6" to this measurement to allow for give and growth. Use this measurement to select your size.
Suspenders or braces as they were commonly known in the 19th Century were used to hold up the trousers as the high waisted fit of the period trousers made wearing a belt not practical. Button style braces were very popular as much of rural America did not have access to the buckles and slides used for other suspenders. Mom and wives could make the braces at home using available materials such as mattress ticking, homespun and calico cottons and canvas.
