This listing is for a cross-over cotton collar and matching false sleeves known as "sleeve jockeys".

Our new handmade cotton crossover collar is designed to cover a round neckline. This collar is 1 ½ inches wide and extends to 19 inches long. The area that crosses over is the perfect place to position a wonderful broach. The broach can be used to attach the collar to the dress at the front. There is a narrow bias band around the neckline of the collar which tucks into the neckline of the dress and can be used to either pin or baste the collar to your dress. LACE MAY VARY SLIGHTLY FROM PICTURE. The set is also available without the lace trim.

Whether you choose a simple solid cotton for work or every day wear or a pretty crocheted version for a lightly dressier look, collars offer an easy and unique way to change the look of your outfit. Regardless of age, social status, your economic conditions or where you resided in the country, collars were an essential part of every ladies wardrobe.

Our set of sleeve jockeys is trimmed with 2 rows of narrow pin tucking. They have a 1 inch wide cuff and are closed with mother-of-pearl buttons and a buttonhole. The top of the jockey has a casing through which we have threaded an adjustable elastic. The elastic may be removed and drawstrings inserted if desired. Our jockeys measure 14 inches from casing to cuff and the wrist opening is 8 inches and may be adjusted by moving the button.

UNDERSLEEVES or sleeve jockeys as they were also called are one of the most common accessories worn by women in the 1800’s. They were used not only for their looks but also to help protect the garments from soil and wear. While most sleeve jockeys were worn under the wider pagoda style sleeves, they were also found under shirt or bishop style and coat sleeves. Sleeve jockeys, chemisettes and collars were often made in sets and trimmed with similar edgings helping to enhance the illusion that a complete body was being worn when in fact it was just the matching accessories.

This set is made with 100% clear cotton. White was the common color as it showed that you were a great housekeeper and could maintain white items, but we offer these items in cream and black also. Some of the collars are shown with broaches, these are NOT included with the listing.

The set can be machine washed in cool to warm water, bleached if necessary BUT should be hung to dry.
