Cotton Pin Tucked Undersleeves. Sleeve Jockeys, White, Black, cream
Our set of sleeve jockeys is made of 100% clear cotton and trimmed with up to 5 rows of narrow pin tucking. They have a 1-inch-wide cuff and are closed with mother-of-pearl buttons and a buttonhole. The top of the jockey has a casing through which we have threaded an adjustable elastic. The elastic may be removed, and drawstrings inserted if desired. Our jockeys measure 14 inches from casing to cuff and the wrist opening is 8 inches and may be adjusted by moving the button.
Undersleeves or sleeve jockeys as they were also called are one of the most common accessories worn by women in the 1800’s. They were used not only for their looks but also to help protect the garments from soil and wear. While most sleeve jockeys were worn under the wider pagoda style sleeves, they were also found under shirt or bishop style and coat sleeves. Sleeve jockeys, chemisettes and collars were often made in sets and trimmed with similar edgings helping to enhance the illusion that a complete body was being worn when in fact it was just the matching accessories.
This set is shown in white but can be ordered in black or cream.
