Ladies wore belts over their bodice and skirts to help emphasize the waistline, to hide the join between the bodice and skirt, or to cover a clothing malfunction. Ladies made belts out of many different fabrics. Often the belt was used as a showpiece for the ladies handiwork. Women would spend hours working up intricate designs in needlework, beadwork or braidwork.
