Red and White Trimmed White Lace Fanchon Styled Day Cap, daycap, Victorian
This elegant day cap is made of white lace. The crown of the cap features a red folded ribbon accented with a narrow white ribbon and pearl beads, ending in ribbon bows. Milliner's wire is encased in the front edge of the cap, which provides a comfortable and secure way to keep the cap on your head and can be adjusted to fit your head. The back of the cap is edged with 3-1/2 inch wide gathered lace. A white bow featuring a simple cameo button finishes the back of the cap. This is a soft light-weight cap that is easy to wear and offers a great way to complete your look. Unlike many of the day caps of the Era this cap is meant to sit on top of your finished coiffure and NOT to contain your hair.
Day caps were worn by most married women for both morning and day wear. The social status and economic means dictating the fabrics and trims used. Many of the more elaborately trimmed caps were worn for evening wear as well. Many considered Red and White to be true patriotic Southern colors.
