Tucked Petticoat, Historical Petticoats, Modesty Slip
Our tucked petticoats are made of 100% cotton, with 5 rounds of pintucks at the lower edge. The petticoat is trimmed with a simple round of cotton eyelet and a pretty satin bow. It has a drawstring waist so will fit most women up to 70 inches in the waist and hips. We offer a variety of skirt lengths with a lower circumference of 88 inches allowing for a long stride or even running upon necessity.
Tucked petticoats offer a wonderful alternative to the simple petticoat. These petticoats were often worn as an underhoop petticoat known as modesty slip. When worn with a hoop it provided a layer of modesty if the hoop was flipped and revealed more than the wearer wished. They can be stiffened with a good starching and provide a bit of skirt support if another skirt support garment such as a cage, hoop or corded petticoat is not worn. It also provided a layer between the body and the hoop or cage to help prevent one's foot from getting caught in the bones or wires. In the winter it provided an extra layer for warmth. Tucked petticoats were not just worn during the mid-Victorian era but extend back through to Elizabethan times. The bands of pintucks helped control the skirts, making walking and movement much easier, so if you are recreating any point in the past and find your skirts in need of some assistance, the tucked petticoat may be the answer. This skirt is also perfect for those working at Historical sites.
For the best results this petticoat should fall about 4 inches above your ankle. Simple growth tucks may be used to shorten a petticoat. TALL? SHORT? We can make a tucked petticoat to accommodate all heights. Just choose your desired length.
Our petticoats can be machine washed in cool to warm water, bleached if necessary BUT should be hung to dry.
