TSM-740 Union Sack Coat is for the basic unlined sack coat used by the soldiers. The coat is styled so that it hangs loosely off the shoulders and falls straight to about mid-hip. It is not a fitted jacket.

By definition a sack coat is a “loose fitting jacket or short coat without a waist seam”. (From A Dictionary of Costume and Fashion, Mary Brooks Picken) Prior to the Civil War, civilian sack coats were worn as casual wear and as work coats. In 1857 the military adopted the sack coat as part of the uniform “for fatigue purposes”. It is for this reason the coat is also known as a fatigue coat.
