NO-it is not a wrapper in the sense of a morning robe, but a dress that can be worn either as a basic work dress or when accessorized with a pretty collar and fancy belt can be “dressed up” for the look of a day or better dress. By definition a wrapper was a garment which flows from the shoulders. Our dress features a lined bodice with a fitted back and a skirt that has adequate circumference to be worn with or without a hoop skirt. Fabric is pleated at the shoulders giving the garment a wonderful fullness in the bust and waist making it truly adjustable. This fullness is arranged in the front and held in place with a belt, giving the dress a slightly fan-front or gathered bodice look depending on how the fullness is arranged. This loose fitting makes the garment adjustable for maternity wear as well. This style was worn from the 1840’s thru the 1870’s. This outfit would be appropriate for Civil War reenactments as well as other mid 1800’s events such as Dickens or Christmas Fairs, fur trade rendezvous or wagon train (Prairie) events. It would also be a good outfit for historical sites.
This dress is shown with a hoop skirt and broach. These items are NOT included but are offered in other listings.
This style is very user friendly. It fits comfortably and with the V-front bodice is easy to put on and take off. It is recommended that a hoop skirt and petticoat be worn with this dress due to the lighter weight of the fabric.
